This is the second of seven novels of the epic fantasy series called A Song of Ice and Fire and it is an amazing story that reminisces of Medieval Europe. It is a very complicated story about power and the wars for more power.
Martin tells the story from many different points-of-view, following many different story lines and it gets so difficult to follow who hates/loves whom, that I had to start taking notes just to keep up with the characters and the constant changing relations. Nonetheless, this book (as was the one before it) is a completely engrossing read. Even though this book was 1000 pages long, I don’t feel like any of the pages were a waste of time. All of the characters are very interesting and are so well developed that the reader finds the most enthralling points of this series is just to see what will happen to the key players in the novel.
If you don’t already know, I am a fan of fantasy novels, so you could say that I was already predisposed to the oddities of a “fantasy” novel, but before you diss this book merely because of its genre, take into account that this is not like any fantasy book I have ever read. I would say that this book reads more like a medieval soap opera, but with lots of mature subject matters and violence.
Overall, this series is turning into an awesome story that I will definitely be continuing. I’m hooked.
